Commerce Minister Emphasizes Food Safety as a Top Priority for Cambodia's Royal Government

PHNOM PENH, July 24, 2024 — At the National Workshop on “Enhancing Collaboration for the Effective Implementation of the Food Control System in Cambodia,” Commerce Minister Cham Nimul emphasized the royal government's prioritization of food safety, ranking it foremost among 12 critical issues to be addressed.

Speaking at the event held at the Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh Hotel on July 23, Minister Cham detailed the collaborative efforts required from all related ministries and institutions. These organizations, ranging from agricultural producers to food service providers, are tasked with sharing information and coordinating to develop and implement national programs that analyze and manage potential risks throughout the food production chain. This initiative aims to ensure comprehensive adherence to food safety standards and to keep the public well-informed with the active involvement of all stakeholders and consumers.

The Ministry of Commerce has been proactive in preparing numerous laws and regulations to ensure that business operators comply with national standards and Cambodia’s obligations as a member of various regional and international bodies. Notable legislation includes the Law on Food Safety, the Law on Consumer Protection, and the Law on E-Commerce.

Cham expressed optimism that the workshop would enhance understanding of the regulatory and policy framework governing food safety in Cambodia. The event featured discussions and shared experiences from both national and international experts on relevant topics.

The workshop, co-organized by the Ministry of Commerce and the Food and Agriculture Export Alliance (FAEA), with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), underscores Cambodia's commitment to strengthening its food safety protocols and collaboration across sectors.
